The SES have had tracker dog units for about 30 years based in Perth Western Australia.
Currently there are no operational tracking dogs in Western Australia. When we had operational dogs we were getting around 12 call outs a year with most of our work being in the urban area.
Police request the assistance of the tracker dogs through the Metro SES Duty Officer.
The dogs are family pets that are being trained for this very important job. We like to start training them from a puppy (8 weeks old) and as we are all volunteers we do not get paid.
Our dogs are scent discrimination dogs, but can just look for a human scent.
It takes at least 1 to 2 years of training to become an operational dog.
